In the previous post, I asked you about the future of moonmoon. Along with better compatibility, most of you asked for an easy way to manage subscriptions. I’m happy to tell you that some work have been done and that the next release of moonmoon will feature a user-friendly administration panel. Here are screenshots:

Those of you who use the development version off the SVN trunk can test it already. Others will have to wait that the new administration panel get tested. Don’t hesitate to send me your feedback on it and forgive me if I do not answer e-mails immediately.

I currently have a lot of work and can not hack on moonmoon as often as I would like to. The project is still alive, with interesting performance tweaks in the trunk. The next version will bring delayed load to avoid long response time. However, I don’t think it’s enough to make a new release.

This why I’m asking you: what should include the next version of moonmoon ?

I had some e-mails about RSS compatibility issues but this point heavily relies on simplepie updates. I’ll try to look for solution anyway. If this is your main concern, let me know.

Also tell me if you use moonmoon, it’s always cool to see it spreading around the world, even in washing machines

Here is the result of what I announced a few days ago. This 0.2 release should bring improved performance to your moonmoon. Basically, more caching systems have been implemented (output caching and http 304). Most of the time, pages should load faster. Moonmoon may still be slow when it has to reload feeds.

The package is available for download there: http://moonmoon.org/download-latest.php .

Update happens just like usual:

backup your custom files (OPML, config.yml, CSS, etc.)

replace your old moonmoon with the new files

restore your custom files

Enjoy !

Edit : apparently, the http cache didn’t work in the release package. It has been fixed in the current package. For those who have already installed moonmoon 0.2, all you have to update is the index.php. I’m sorry for that. More testing next time maybe.

But from now on, I think I’ll tweak the performance a little bit so we can use it with more feeds. I started to introduce more caching mechanisms so expect a faster moonmoon soon.

As promised, a maintenance release is out. This 0.1.6 beta version is coming right from the trunk and is bundled with the latest Simplepie. This version also introduces a new feature called “Let’s dig the moon for cheese” with allow to show all feeds titles in cache.

For those who already had a moonmoon installed, upgrading is pretty easy:

backup your people.opml and your config.yml

remove the old moonmoon

install the new moonmoon

restore your files

And that’s all. Hope you will enjoy and don’t hesitate to give your feedback in comments !

I got a few e-mails asking about the current status of the development and I really appreciate your interest for moonmoon. So here are some news. I commited the latest Simplepie to the trunk this morning. It should fix problems with some feeds but some are still not loading properly. For the next release, I’m considering to make moonmoon parser independant so we should be able to use Magpie instead of Simplepie. Obviously, making the parsing process more robust will become a priority.

Expect a maintenance release soon, so stay tuned
